Producing sound from the ney doesn’t require any special skills or hidden talents. By paying attention to just a few key tips, you can to produce sound from the ney and start playing in a short time. First, hold the ney without covering any of the holes. Then, determine your blowing direction—whether from the right or left side of your mouth. Once you find the side that feels more comfortable and doesn’t tire your lips, begin blowing from that side. If you blow by bringing the right side of your lips closer to the mouthpiece, you’ll be considered left-handed (playing with your left hand on top).
Important Tips While Blowing into the Ney
After placing your lips on the başpare (mouthpiece of the ney) at an angle of about 20 degrees (between 15 and 30 degrees), try to produce sound by blowing with medium strength—as if whistling. Keep trying this patiently and repeatedly. If no sound comes out, slightly adjust the angle by gently moving the ney and try again. What matters most here is that no air should escape from the sides of your lips where they touch the başpare. Continue this exercise by repeating it and making slight angle adjustments until you get the right sound. Meanwhile, remember that you need to blow into the ney.
