Types of Neys

Each individual’s voice is unique. Therefore, every vocalist performing a piece will render it in different tones — for some singers, the piece may sound too high-pitched (soprano), while for others, it may sound too low-pitched (bass). For this reason, when performing a piece, instrumentalists (sazendeler) adjust the performance to suit the vocalist’s vocal range.

While it is possible to change the tuning on many instruments through various methods to perform a piece in different keys, fixed-tuning instruments like the ney are tuned permanently during their construction, making such adjustments impossible afterward. To overcome this limitation, fixed-tuning instruments like the ney are manufactured with different tunings during the production process; as a result, neys of various lengths and pitches have been created.

The answer to the question “What are the types of ney, or rather, the varieties of ney?” “What are the types of ney, or rather, the varieties of ney?” can be examined under two groups: "Main Harmony" and "Intermediate Harmony.
